Aged 6, he was living at 36 Kings Street, St Lukes, London with his father- William T NEWTON [49] surgeon born Leighton Heath [sic], Suffolk; mother- Laura (née NEALE) [38] born St Lukes London; brother Frank W C [16]; sisters Lucy M [15], Grace L [13], Nina F [9]and Agnes D {7 months) all the children except Agnes born in London, Agnes recorded as Westcliffe on Sea 1911 census...John not yet found. His family at The Shrubberies, Lakenheath were father- William Thomas NEWTON [59] surgeon born Lakenheath; mother Laura [46] born London; sister Mary (Lucy M ?) Enlisted in 16th June 1915. Sent overseas on 19th September 1915, commissioned 7th December 1916. On 23rd April 1917 they were near Bailleul and Gavrelle. On the night of 23/24th April "C" and "D" Coy (Lt Newton was actually "B" Coy attached to "D") relieved "A" and "B" Companies successfully. When dawn broke "D" Coy, occupying a forward post in a demolished trench, came under sniper fire and Lt Newton and Sgt Nicole were killed. The company became cut off and all became casualties. |
