1901 census... Aged 6, he was living at 36 Kings Street, St Lukes, London with his father- William T NEWTON [49] surgeon born Leighton Heath [sic], Suffolk; mother- Laura (née NEALE) [38] born St Lukes London; brother Frank W C [16]; sisters Lucy M [15], Grace L [13], Nina F [9]and Agnes D {7 months) all the children except Agnes born in London, Agnes recorded as Westcliffe on Sea

1911 census...John not yet found. His family at The Shrubberies, Lakenheath were father- William Thomas NEWTON [59] surgeon born Lakenheath; mother Laura [46] born London; sister Mary (Lucy M ?) [23] born London; sister Nina Frances [18] born London and sister Agnes Dorothy [10] born London

The Army have his mother's address after the war as Mrs Laura Newton, The Yews, Lakenheath


Enlisted in 16th June 1915.
Sent overseas on 19th September 1915, commissioned 7th December 1916.
On 23rd April 1917 they were near Bailleul and Gavrelle. On the night of 23/24th April "C" and "D" Coy (Lt Newton was actually "B" Coy attached to "D") relieved "A" and "B" Companies successfully. When dawn broke "D" Coy, occupying a forward post in a demolished trench, came under sniper fire and Lt Newton and Sgt Nicole were killed. The company became cut off and all became casualties.
